Lee Gainer's snappy header graphic

Friday, April 8th  -  New work, a new process, and a little news to share. As always, feel free to email with comments and questions.

white flight

I recently finished a new series entitled White Flight. It includes 24 original works made with woven photographs and linen tape. These works use images of the General Lee, the mechanical star of the early 80s hit show, The Dukes of Hazzard, as a metaphor for the social phenomena of white flight as it occurred in the US during the 1950s and 60s.

developments : wovens

For the past three months, I have researched and tested a process for new works that I call wovens. These are works created by weaving together two prints that are developed from found images that I have manipulated digitally. This process combines my conceptual interest of exploring the hidden messages and unwritten rules of modern American life with my desire to work with the print physically as an object. White Flight is the first series I have completed using this process. Currently, I am working on Climb Every Mountain, a series of larger works that will evaluate the value of reality based fantasy. I am excited about this new path and hope you will enjoy the results of my endeavors.

I'd like to let you know about my work with this year's SOURCE festival to be held this summer in DC.
I was selected to participate in the Artistic Blind Dates program (ABDs) and received a Creative Communities Fund Grant in support of this effort. The ABDs are made up of 4 groups of 3 artists, each artist from a different discipline. In my group, we have a pianist/composer (Haskell Small), a director/puppeteer (Cecilia Cackley), and me. We are tasked with the development and performance of a 30 - 40 minute play/experience/presentation about pretty much anything we want. We have a title to tease you with. Our performance will be called: Adjusting the Volume.
Save the date(s)! We'll be performing on: June 16th @ 7PM, June 19th @ 3PM, June 25th @ 6PM, and July 2nd @ 3PM. ABD tickets are only $10. This includes the performance and a Q and A session following immediately after. Along with the ABDs, there will be 3 full length plays and 18 short plays presented so you can mix and match your theatrical evening.
